Mission Statement
FamilyMentalHealth.com's mission is to provide resource
information to help understand how to cope with life's stresses, and
assist in the evaluation of any mental illness symptoms a person may
develop as a result of being overwhelmed or frustrated.
U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher (Dec. 1999), who says the
burden of mental illness is on a par with cancer and heart disease,
offers these definitions:
- Mental health: the successful performance of mental function,
resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with
other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with
adversity. From early childhood until late life, mental health is
the springboard of thinking and communication skills, learning,
emotional growth, resilience and self-esteem.
- Mental illness: refers collectively to all mental disorders.
- Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized
by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior, and associated with
distress and/or impaired functioning.
When Psychiatric Help is Needed
When help is needed for ourselves or family, it's important that
we begin with professionals. It is important to gather the right
information for a psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, and
a treatment plan for:
- Children
- Adolescents
- Adults
- Senior Citizens
